Old Fort Jackson is a must see destination for those traveling to Savannah, Georgia. This impressive fort, located at 1 Fort Jackson Rd., is the oldest fort in Georgia, and was actually built on the very site where an earthen fort once stood, that had been built as early as 1776. Later, this fort was used both in the war of 1812, and during the Civil War.
Today, it is open every day, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day, from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. After a long and illustrious career, the fort was decommissioned in 1905, and today is owned by the Coastal Heritage Society. Visitors here begin their tour with the history and an overview of the fort, which enables them to experience what life was like during its active duty years. They are also treated to reenactments, cannon demonstrations, from June through mid August, and special annual events such as the Memorial Day celebration, which includes the playing of taps and a demonstration of an 1841 Mountain Howitzer cannon. In May, the fort is also the site of the Scottish Highland Games, complete with Scottish music, food, and sports.
Every year, thousands of visitors discover Old Fort Jackson, and are impressed with this important piece of American history.
