The Historic Savannah Theatre is a landmark of downtown Savannah, GA and a must see for any visitor. It's known as the oldest theater in the United states and has been around since the 1800's. Back then it was a playhouse for the famous local actors of the day.
Since then it has undergone many renovations and restorations to make it what it is today. The theatre traditionally hosts six showings each week, often with more than one show running at the same time. It hosts all types of shows, from theater to music to dance to comedy. It's located conveniently next to Chippewa Square, the picturesque park-like area that most people think of when they think of Savannah. It's the location for the famous "park bench" scene out of the movie Forrest Gump.
The theater's location near the square makes it a popular tourist spot; visitors can also stop and sample the cuisine at local restaurants and take some great pictures in the park along their way. If you're looking for a little piece of history mixed with a splash of modern entertainment, the Savannah Theatre is the perfect stop on the agenda.
