Founded in 1839, the Georgia Historical Society, with its main office at 501 Whitaker Street in Savannah, is the oldest historical society in the South, and contains the largest collection of diverse material related to the history of Georgia. This repository contains over 4 million manuscripts, tens of thousands of photographs, and thousands of rare books, which are available for those researching families, places, or historical events in the state.
The Historical Society is also active in producing educational programs, produces a television and radio program, Today in Georgia History, publishes publications such as the Georgia Historical Quarterly, and is responsible for overseeing the placement of historical markers around the state. The Society also provides annual events, including a lecture series and programs featuring authors and historians.
Every year, its 6,000 members, and associates from around the world, as well as the general public, take advantage of this very important collection of information, for research projects, professional articles, and personal use. The data can be accessed through either the Savannah or the Atlanta offices, or off site, by contacting the Society.
