The historical value of Factor's Walk revolves around the cotton trade in the south. In fact, downtown Savannah was one of the busiest ports in the nation by the mid 1800s. It was during this time that king cotton rules the American south and Savannah was at the center of it all. Today, many of the older building have been nicely preserved and really give visitors a sense of what the area was like in its heyday. However, the cotton boom did not last long in Savannah due to the boll weevil which was a pest that destroyed much of the cotton crop.
Factor's Walk remains one of the few reminders of the past of Savannah. One thing to note is that because it is reminiscent of the olden days, it is hard to get around on the steep ramps and cobblestone streets. But it is definitely worth a visit to such a historically rich destination.
