At the heart of the city of Savannah, Georgia, lies the beautiful Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, an outstanding Catholic house of worship. It is located at 222 East Harris Street in a very wooded and pleasant neighborhood at the corner of Abercorn Street.
It took 23 years to build the Cathedral (1873 to 1896) and fire almost completely destroyed it in 1898. The interiors are filled with colorful glass windows and admirable murals. There is a majestic organ (2,308 pipes!) and the awesome historic walls provide wonderful acoustics. The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist is not only a beautiful house of worship but is also an important site for the Catholics because it is the Mother Church of the Catholic Diocese of Savannah, which includes 90 counties.
The surrounding area is also very pleasant and perfect for a walk. For instance, adjacent to the church one can find the peaceful area of Lafayette Square, a 1837 square containing a lovely fountain. Visiting the Cathedral is a moving experience of the beauty and peace of this holy place.
