Grand Rapids Civic Theatre

The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre was founded in 1925 and has since flourished into one of the nation’s largest community theatres. Productions include current Broadway favorites, classic plays, and shows for children of all ages, making the theatre a popular source of entertainment for the whole family.

Ranked fifth in size among all community theatres in the United States, the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre stages at least 9 different mainstage shows every year, with performances on some Wednesdays and Thursdays, and every Friday through Sunday, for the length of each show’s run. The Civic Theatre is also home to the Civic School of Theatre Arts, which holds acting, dance, and technical theatre courses for people of all ages and abilities.

With around 1,600 students partaking in their offerings each year, this is yet another way that the Civic Theatre nurtures the arts in Grand Rapids. And even the buildings that house the theatre have distinct cultural value to the city, as the construction each of the facility’s four structures dates back over a hundred years.

The next time you’re in the city, make certain to set aside time to take in a show at the Civic Theatre. You’ll not only be supporting one of most celebrated cultural institutions in Grand Rapids, but also taking part in the community theatre experience, which has been a central part of American entertainment for centuries.
