Oil Sands Discovery Centre
The Oil Sands Discovery Centre in Fort McMurray is located in the Athabasca Oil Sands, one of the largest natural oil reserves in the world. Just a short drive up from Edmonton, you can come up and experience the science behind what makes our planet move, specifically energy.
Admission to the Centre includes access to the Dr. Karl A. Clark Exhibit Hall where you can learn the history and science behind the excavations driven by 150 tonne hauler trucks and even see one of these monsters up close and in person. Watch a live demonstration of how oil is extracted from the sands and see a short video or film on the history of the process.
On Saturdays and Sundays, you can visit the Discovery Lab, where the whole family can partake in experiments that will captivate and entertain you. The Industrial Equipment Garden and Bucketwheel Exhibit are closed during the winter, so if you want to get a look at one of the largest land-based artifacts in Canada, an 850 tonne giant named Cyrus, make sure to book your trip in the warmer months.
Come for education and entertainment that is suitable for the whole family.
