War Between the States Museum
107 South Guerry Street Florence, SC 29501
The War Between the States Museum, located in Florence, South Carolina, offers civil war aficionados, history buffs, and those interested in local history a unique opportunity to learn about his crucial period in U.S. history.
The museum, which began when several private collectors choose to share their personal memorabilia with the public, has continued to expand since its founding in 1988. Although the museum contains many weapons, camp items, and other relics recovered from battlefields, the museum also includes authentic uniforms and personal items. Although many artifacts have been donated by members of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, the museum also houses many artifacts from the Florence Stockade which was a local prison for Union soldiers.
In addition to viewing actual artifacts, visitors can study the numerous historic photographs which line the walls. While visitors are drawn to battlefield artifacts, the museum also contains a display which enables visitors to envision home life for those not fighting in the war. Additionally, the museum contains a library and research material.
While the museum charges a small admission fee and is open every Wednesday and Saturday from 10 - 5, those planning to be in Florence in early December should consider the Annual Open House. In the past, the Annual Open House has been free of charge to the public and features civil war re-enactors, book signings, and refreshments.
