St. Simons island lighthouse is situated close to the entrance to St. Simons sound in U.S.coast guard district no. 7. The height of the light is about 104ft(32m) and it contains a fresnel lens which rotates flashing a beam of light in every 60 seconds. The light keeper resides in a two story victorian brick house. The eight sided original light house was constructed in 1811.
During the U.S. Civil War in 1861 the light house was ruined by confederate forces to restrain the union forces from using it. It was replaced in 1872 when the reconstruction took place. Electricity was added in 1934 and automatic system completed in 1954. The lighthouse is still operating normally as an active lighthouse (useful for navigation) and as a museum. The United States Coast Guard had given it to the Coastal Georgia Historical Society on lease.
In 2010 a major renovation took place in the lighthouse. For several months it remained closed to the public. The interior and exterior paint was sandblasted off and then repainted. The iron handrail posts on the top were replaced. All iron work was repaired. While undergoing repairs great care was taken in protecting the fresnel lens.
St. Simons island lighthouse is one of only five surviving lighthouses in Georgia. It casts its light as far as 23 miles out to sea. Different from other lighthouses there are 129 steps to climb to get a panoramic view of Jekyll Island, the city of Bruswick and the southern part of St. Simons island.
The redbrick dwelling of the lighthouse keeper is a beautiful victorian design which houses a museum and gift shop.
Besides the museum the other fabulous sites in St. Simons island are public beach, historic sites & monuments, avenue of oaks, Bloody marsh battle site and Gascoigne Bluff.
