The Georgia Sea Turtle Center
The Georgia Sea Turtle Center 214 Old Village Boulevard Jekyll Island, GA 31527 Phone: (912) 635-4444 Website: http://www.georgiaseaturtlecenter.com
Established to rehabilitate turtles found stranded on the coasts of Georgia, the center not only tends to wounded turtles, it also serves as a site for researchers to study the animals. Turtles brought to the center receive individualized care, depending on the nature and extent of injuries or illnesses.
The Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island caters to the curious tourist as well as those interested in ecology and conservation. The center is open from 10 am to 2 pm on Mondays and 9 am to 5 pm from Tuesday through Sunday.
Exhibits detailing the turtle’s life cycle and highlighting conservation efforts appeal to teachers who may plan field trips to the center. Students learn about threats to the turtle population and how they can help lessen dangers to these reptiles. Groups of 10 or more may sign up for a variety of guided tours offered by the center’s staff.
During the summer, children may attend Sea Turtle Camp. Summer evenings also feature turtle walks where participants accompany staff to find loggerhead turtle nesting sites. Proceeds from the center, including donations, admission fees, and profits from the gift shop, go to caring for wounded turtles and maintaining the center.
