The Federal Law Enforcement Training center (FLETC ) is an inter-agency law enforcement training organization established for 82 U.S federal law enforcement agencies. State, local and international law enforcement agencies get services from FLETC. This center is located at Glynco, Georgia near the port city of Brunswick, Georgia.
Besides Glynco FLETC operates 2 other residential training sites at Artesia, New Mexico, and Charelston, South Carolina. FLETC also conducts an inservice requalification training facility in Cheltonham, Maryland. FLETC is also responsible for supervising and program management for the international law enforcement academy (ILEA) in Gaborone, Botswana, San Salvador, El Salvador, and Lima, Peru and supports ILEA s in Hungary and Thailand.
Before 1970 the training received by the officers and agents were of varied quality. Inconsistent standards, insufficient facilities and a low priority within the organization were typical. However, because of the perceived costs and the lack of any alternatives, each agency would train their personnel independently. The F.B.I, D.E.A and U.S army C.I.D were not aligned with FLETC.
During 1960 s studies conducted demonstrated the importance of qulitative and effective training by a group of professional instructors with modern training facilities and standard course content. At that point, Congress took the responsibility to plan and construct the Consolidated Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.( CFLETC ). In 1970 CFLETC began its training operations in Washinton D.C. The permanent location of the training center was originally planned for the Washington, D.C, but after many reviews the former Glynco naval air station near Brunswick, GA was selected. In 1975 the New Federal Law Enforcement Training Center ( FLETC ) relocated from Washinton D.C and started training at Glynco.
To coordinate the activities of their personnel and to conduct advanced agency based programs most of the 82 partner organizations transfer their law enforcement training operations to the FLETC s permanent sites because of the quality of training and cost effectiveness achieved by such a program compared to the costs to an agency to essentially duplicate this facility.
FLETC conducts research to develop special training technologies, particularly to modify the existing training methods. Limited exports of training methods is imparted to other locations also. Students turn into skilled law enforcement personnel and learned to meet the challenges of an enforcement career. They become responsible enforcement officers and have been exposed to a great deal of interaction with students from other agencies. This interaction allows them to get acquainted with the missions and duties of their colleagues.
As an interagency training organisation FLETC has some of the best professionals to serve on its faculty and staff. Most of them are permanent staff. The remaining staff are Federal officers and investigators on short term appointment from their parent organizations or recently retired . This provides a the necessary and valuable experience to compliment and enhance the training the agents receive.
