The Asheville Regional Airport, located 9 miles south of downtown Asheville, North Carolina, provides commercial, private, charter, and military air service for Western North Carolina and the surrounding areas. Commercial air service is provided by many of the nation's major airlines, including US Airways, Delta, AirTran, and United Airlines, and provides connecting air service around the world.
To accommodate air passengers, the airport has many amenities, including a restaurant, an ATM, a gift shop, and comfortable waiting areas. The airport originally opened in 1961, but has seen unprecedented growth in the last 5 years. The airport is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and has parking available for the affordable rates. Recent expansion at the airport has allowed the airport to accommodate up to 13 commercial aircraft at one time. Passenger flow has increased dramatically in recent years, with an annual increase of over 25% from 2009 to 2010. In the last year, AirTran has started commercial service, and Allegiant Airlines has started nonstop service to Orlando, Florida.
Overall, the airport saw over 700,000 passengers in 2010. Even President Obama visited in 2011, with Air Force One landing at the airport.
