St. George Opera House
The St. George Opera House also known as The St. George Social Hall is a historic building built by the St. George Gardener’s Club in St. George, Utah. It is located on the Main Street, Utah.
It was originally built as a wine cellar. It was later converted to a theatre building when the demand for wine decreased. The building has been restored through community efforts and is now again the home to community activities including plays and concerts for this historic district.
The local dramatic clubs and outside players conduct refined productions which make the crowd cry, smile and cheer. The unique feature of the building is the movable floor which could be inclined towards the stage for better viewing of plays, and could be leveled for dances and parties. This allows everyone in the audience to have an unobstructed view of the play.
The facilities are still in use today and can be rented out for events. It was selected as a legacy project of the Washington history. It is one of the first public buildings built in Utah.
