Health care for naval personnel and their families stationed in and around Beaufort, South Carolina, is primarily delivered at the Naval Hospital in Beaufort. The Naval Hospital Beaufort offers medical care to active Navy and Marines serving in the area as well as to retired military personnel from all branches and their families who live in the region. The hospital opened in 1949 and sits on 127 acres of former plantation land.
In addition to the hospital proper, Naval Hospital Beaufort also operates two Branch Medical Clinics at the Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot, where new Marines are trained, and at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort. Unlike most U.S. military medical establishments, Naval Hospital Beaufort is its own military complex and not attached to another installation or base, and included housing for 53 families and 190 individuals in bachelor housing. The facilities are capable of serving the full patient population of 35,000 people.
The military staff of the hospital and its branch clinics are able to provide everything from infant care to trauma surgery to the active duty military, retirees and dependents who rely on their care.
