Marine Corps Air Station
Home of one of the world's largest air strips, the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, South Carolina is one of the U.S. military's most important installations. Located about 8 miles north of the Naval Hospital on Port Royal Island, the Marine Corps Air Station, known to locals as Fightertown, consists of more than 1300 civilian and military personnel who prepare the personnel of Marine Group 31 and its component squadrons for deployment.
The MCAS has a rich tradition or military incidents, including hosting battles during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Besides being imperative to many military operations, the MCAS also hosts an air show open to the public every year during the last weekend of April. The show demonstrates the unique talent of the United States Naval FlightÕs Demonstration Team, the world famous Blue Angels. Best of all, the event is free! If your schedule doesn't allow you to attend the air demonstration, don't worry, because the downtown Beaufort area is designated entirely to preserving history. You can visit over 90 significant historical buildings and several museums dedicated to providing an accurate account of the area's past.
The MCAS is a great place to support our military, watch them in action, and immerse yourself in the area's history.
